Environment Scanning for VFX

This module is in development.

Scanning for visual effects can be a challenging task.  Clients in this industry not only demand the highest fidelity geometry and color but also in a very restricted time frame.  Sometimes on set your access may be limited to as little as 30 minutes in between shots.  This has molded my approach to scanning for visual effects, focusing on speed of capture and the units I have chosen to reflect this.

This module will focus on the concept of capturing a large space quickly and efficiently.  The approach takes into account a crew of 3 people, each assigned a specific role and over a 4–6 hour period including setup and breakdown.  Our crew consisted of drone operator, lidar and photogrammetry scan techs.  While we captured much more than what is required for such a limitation, the core scanners and crew would remain the same.  Scanning with both the Navvis MLX and VLX3 is unnecessary as the VLX3 and BLK360 data is more than sufficient.

Please Note:

The initial capture was focused on Navvis data being implemented which unfortunately is not supported by Reality Capture at this time.  Some lessons will include Reality Capture for informational purposes and there are plans to return to the site in early 2025 to capture additional high-res lidar (RTC360) and heavy DSLR which is more Reality Capture friendly.

Metashape 2.2 is currently in beta and further processing lessons will be put on hold until final release is available.  Currently, MS 2.2 crashes when using Navvis data and this has been submitted to support and will be fixed on final release.  There are a lot of new features which previously required complex python scripting, so I decided to put these lessons on hold for now.
