Introduction to Smart Phone 3D Scanning

These lessons are currently in development.

The advent of advanced smartphone technology has democratized 3D scanning, making it accessible to enthusiasts and professionals alike. Among the leading tools in this space are smartphone apps like Pix4D Catch, which, when combined with the iPhone Pro’s LiDAR capabilities, offer powerful solutions for creating high-quality 3D models. This topic explores the applications, techniques, and best practices for using these tools to achieve professional-grade results in 3D scanning.  The iPhone Pro has revolutionized 3D scanning, making it more accessible and efficient. Whether for game development, visual effects, or architectural documentation, these tools provide a powerful means to capture and create detailed 3D models. By following best practices and leveraging advanced post-processing software, users can achieve professional-quality results that enhance their creative projects.

Understanding the Technology

The iPhone Pro models, particularly the iPhone 14-16 Pro, are equipped with a LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) sensor. This sensor uses laser pulses to measure distances accurately, capturing the shape and depth of the environment. The integration of LiDAR technology into a smartphone allows for real-time 3D scanning, enhancing the detail and accuracy of models.

3D Scanning Apps Utilizing iPhone Pro LiDAR

Several apps leverage the iPhone Pro’s LiDAR sensor for 3D scanning, each offering unique features and capabilities.  This module will cover each app as well as a sample scan tutorial.

  • Pix4D Catch: Pix4D Catch transforms your smartphone into a 3D scanning device, using the camera and LiDAR to capture images and depth data. The app is user-friendly, making it suitable for both beginners and experienced users. It integrates seamlessly with Pix4D’s cloud services for advanced processing.  This app is more focused on survey and has advanced integration with GNSS ground control tools and techniques unlike other similar apps.
  • Scaniverse: Scaniverse focuses on ease of use and high-quality output, allowing users to capture, edit, and share 3D scans quickly. It supports real-time preview, scale adjustments, and detailed editing to refine the models.
  • Kiri Engine: Kiri Engine is an innovative 3D scanning app that leverages photogrammetry and lidar technology to create highly detailed 3D models from photos captured on a smartphone or camera. It is user-friendly, making 3D scanning accessible to beginners while offering advanced options for professionals. The app supports multiple file formats, enabling seamless integration with 3D modeling software, game engines, and virtual reality applications.
  • Polycam: Polycam allows users to create detailed 3D models and scans using the iPhone Pro’s LiDAR. It offers robust editing tools directly within the app, enabling users to crop, clean up, and export their models in various formats.
